Chris Turner
Chris Turner
Chris Turner is a classically trained crooner, a soul singer for the ages, with a classic sound that defies his years. Proving to be a writer for our times, he deftly combines jazz, hip-hop, funk, and soul in his music. Chris Turner performs music from “Lovelife is A Challenge”, several widely heard singles and collaborations as well as new pieces off of his upcoming project “Belvedere” set to release shortly. From falsetto to scatting to laying down smooth and creative phrasings, Chris is bringing old soul back in a fresh sound. Graduating from the New School University for Jazz and Contemporary Music immediately started working as an in-demand backing singer for the Soul, Jazz and R&B scenes in New York. Chris tours and records internationally with his own group as well as with Usher, The Roots, Stevie Wonder, Bootsy Collins, Killiam Shakespeare, Sam Smith, Disclosure, Mike Posner, Esperanza Spalding, Bilal, Harvey Mason Sr., Eddie Palmeri, Dianne Reeves, Eric Harland, Consequence, Kris Bowers. Chris was selected to perform as an “Artist To Watch” by BET’s Music Matters. Chris released his first single, “Liquid Love,” the video for which debuted on BET. That single was later released on Sony Records as part of Music Matters first compilation album, along with Melanie Fiona, Big Sean, Miguel and others. His single, “Fly Love,” is being distributed internationally by Rebirth, a remix and DJ label. Chris now is on faculty for his alma mater (New School Jazz) as a vocal coach.
Marcus Gilmore
Marcus Gilmore
In an article entitled “Five Drummers Whose Time Is Now,” Ben Ratliff of The New York Times describes the drummer Marcus Gilmore’s style with the following phrase: “it sounds natural and never looks easy.”
The winner in the “Rising Star Drummer” category of the 2012 DownBeat Critics’ Poll, Marcus is one of the music’s most in-demand drummers. He has already toured the world as a regular member of some of today’s most important jazz groups, including Steve Coleman & Five Elements, the Vijay Iyer Trio, and the Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio, and has performed with countless other luminaries including Chick Corea, Ravi Coltrane, Nicholas Payton, and many others.
Marcus got his start on the drums as a child under the mentorship of his grandfather Roy Haynes, “jazz’s most important living drummer” (The New York Times). At fifteen, the drummer began to work with Steve Coleman, who he met through his uncle, the cornetist/trumpeter Graham Haynes. Before graduating from LaGuardia High School, Marcus had already internalized the saxophonist’s complex and highly personal language well enough to perform in Five Elements, and had also joined the quartet of the pianist-composer Vijay Iyer. He is also the drummer for Chick Corea and The Vigil.
